Covid-19:60-70 job cuts at Aldel Aluminium smelter in the NetherlandsA spokesman for Adel aluminum smelter confirmed that the spread of COVID-19 had reduced demand for the company's aluminum products. It is understood that the Aldel aluminium smelter has a total capacity of 150,000 tonnes of primary aluminium.
Aluminium smelters also face high electricity prices and high production costs, with about 20 per cent of their workforce expected to be affected by the restructuring.
The company will then consult with the works Council and the labor union on follow-up matters, an indefinite period expected to last until early 2021.
Earlier this year Aldel struck a major deal to supply 180,000 tonnes of aluminium to glencore, the multinational company.
It is understood that the Aldel aluminium smelter has a total production capacity of 150,000 tonnes and employs 350 people.
